Previously, we hosted a talk on quantum technologies, but have you ever wondered about the fundamental physics that drives these systems? The answer lies in Condensed Matter Physics, and for this, we are delighted to have Prof. Hridis Pal as our speaker.


Prof. Pal is a theoretical condensed matter physicist whose research explores how individual or collective quantum effects can lead to novel phases of matter and unconventional responses to external perturbations in many-body systems. His work spans a wide range of fascinating topics, including twisted bilayer graphene, moiré materials, surface response in topological semimetals and much more. Title: From Simple Laws to Complex Matter: An Introduction to Condensed Matter Physics


Abstract: The fundamental laws of physics are simple, yet the world around us displays astonishing complexity. Condensed matter physics seeks to understand how this complexity arises when many particles interact according to simple underlying laws. In this talk, I will establish this central idea and illustrate it through a few representative examples. This perspective has important consequences: on the one hand, it underlies modern technologies such as electronics and quantum devices; on the other, it provides a deeper understanding of nature. I will then briefly discuss selected research directions pursued by the condensed matter physics group at IIT Bombay, illustrating how these ideas continue to shape current research.
